The Importance of Sleep Hygiene

Everyone (we hope) can attest to the feeling of waking up alert and refreshed after a good night’s rest. Sleep is the foundation for good health and is one of the best ways to naturally enhance one’s physical health, brain function and emotional well-being. Quality sleep can improve your mood, boost energy levels and fight off anxiety and depression.

Not sleeping enough or not getting quality sleep can disrupt your health in many ways. Inadequate sleep can produce side effects common with many other sleeping disorders, which can increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity and other serious health conditions. The effects of poor sleep can wreak havoc in our daily lives, leading to overall tiredness, lack of motivation, mood changes, headaches and more. Without high quality sleep, our bodies would not be able to repair tissue, replenish cells and restore energy.

So what is keeping you from your best sleep yet? If you are feeling any of the signs outlined previously, it might be a good time to reevaluate your sleep hygiene. Sleep hygiene consists of healthy practices and habits necessary to help you achieve a restful night’s sleep.

Follow these tips to help maintain good sleep hygiene:

  • Maintain a regular sleep routine that consists of at least seven hours of sleep.
  • Avoid strenuous workouts close to bedtime.
  • Allow your bed to be a place for rest and sleep.
  • Establish a relaxed sleep environment.
  • Avoid watching TV and being on your phone or laptop while in bed.
  • Limit stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine and alcohol in the evenings before bed.
  • Refrain from eating large meals close to bedtime.
  • Wake up at the same on weekdays and weekends.

Implementing these lifestyle changes can be effective toward achieving better health.
