Ready…Set…Spring Clean Your Health!

Spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to start fresh. With the summer months creeping up, take some time to reflect on how you can boost your health as we jump into the new season. Refresh your mind and body with these spring cleaning basics.

Allergy-proof your home

A clean home is a low-allergen home. In a survey published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, research found that at least six allergens were detectable in more than fifty percent of homes. Limit the allergens in your home by keeping up with regular housecleaning. Control allergens by clearing out dust prone areas in your household, like the basement, closets and other areas in your home. Give your carpets a deep cleaning, keep several filters for your air conditioning unit on hand and refrain from drying laundry outside.

Stock up at the local farmers market

Eat local and eat fresh! Seton Harker Heights hosts the Harker Heights Farmers Market every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. from May through October. Take advantage of freshly picked, in season produce. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, boost energy levels and aid in weight loss.

Clear out your pantry

Give your pantry the ultimate healthy makeover! Start off by taking inventory of what you have and tossing out any expired items. Eliminate items that can quickly back track your health, such as packaged, high-calorie and nutrient-empty foods. Be sure to wipe down your pantry and remove any dust, crumbs or dirt that can attract unwanted bugs.

Focus on a better sleep routine

May is Better Sleep Month and what better way to celebrate than by revamping your sleeping habits. The key to good sleep is consistency, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Practice your own bedtime ritual without reaching for your phone or tablet. Regulate your body’s clock by sticking to the same wake-up and bedtime every day. Evaluate your sleep space and tidy up any clutter-filled areas. If you are battling a sleep disorder, the Seton Harker Heights Sleep Lab can evaluate, diagnose and treat your condition.

Take your workouts outside

Connect with Mother Nature while you exercise! There are plenty of full-body workouts that don’t require a treadmill or elliptical. Grab a buddy and try an outdoor fitness class, go kayaking or hit the biking trails. Exposure to sunlight as you work up a sweat is a natural antidepressant and the fresh air combined with the endorphins that your body is producing can create energy-boosting effects. Take advantage of the beautiful weather and don’t forget to apply sunscreen before any outdoor workouts!
